It's so EASY to repair: Yamaha CR 450
eBay sale 👉 www.ebay.com/itm/387155095617
I picked up this Yamaha CR 450 a few months ago and was told the meter lamp was burnt out and the left channel had distortion. The CR-450 was released in 1976 as a replacement for the CR-400 which was having issues powering the lower impedance power hungry speakers that were being released in the US. They doubled the output transistors and power handling while also beefing up the power supply and removing the current limiting circuit. It can produce nearly double the 32 watt per channel output at 8 ohms to a 4 ohm speaker. It sounds very warm compared to the rest of Yamaha’s 70’s lineup and is one of my favorite looking so I was very excited to get...

Restoring A Mid Century Classic: The Advent 5012

The large Advent loudspeaker was released in 1968, designed by legendary sound engineer Henry Kloss. His goal was to create a budget friendly speaker that could compete with models that were far more expensive. The original Large Advent (OLA) went on to develop a cult following and garnered attention for it's incredible sound when stacked two pairs high. In the 70's the speaker was updated to t...

    I worked for Advent during the late 70s as a district sales manager in the Southeastern U.S. It's pretty rare to see the 5012 and 5002, but, as I remember, the "Direct Report" tweeter (Direct radiating, parabolic dome, optimum range tweeter) was the big new feature! Unfortunately, as your demo showed, a lot of people felt that the new tweeter was not an improvement over the original Advent tweeter. Most consumers felt that the new tweeter sounded "muted" compared to the original product. You said you matched the levels between your Tannoy's and the 5012s at 1 Khz, but that can cause results similar to what you heard. Pink noise or even white noise might do a better job of letting you match levels to remove efficiency from the equation. Enjoyed the presentation!

    I bought a pair of 5012s pre-Jensen in Seattle at Pacific Stereo. I still run them on my main system and they have been re-foamed a couple times. Still my favorite pair of Large Advents that i will not part with. Great video and i love the restoration work you did on your set.

    I have the 5002 I found local and they are in really good condition. Mine have cone tweeters instead of domes but they still sound good. Edit: whoops my speakers are the 2002 model. That explains the cone tweeters.

    Why replace the resistor? Was it burned out or something? I always thought resistors are like inductors... they pretty much never go bad. Did you change the resistance value to modify the tone? Thanks!

Cheers!

    Truly an outstanding video. It deserves way more views than it has. But I almost passed when I first saw your appearance, because I thought "amatuer". A haircut and a shave would go a long way in promoting your channel. Sorry... that's harsh, but appearance goes a long way if one is trying to portray seriousness in their message. You could have hundreds of k's views on a video of this quality. Take that extra step.

    ruclips.net/video/AJHzhSDgLlY/видео.htmlsi=ISOC9-iGtTRlkKEN If the channels start intermittently start cutting in and out 95% chance its corrosion on speaker relays. Factory relays are not sealed, buy sealed relay replacements and install. The cost between sealed and not sealed relays really begs the question why they didn’t spend the extra few cents. These NADs and Protons would have one of the best histories of reliability in all of hifi. Instead everyone thinks their channels eventually go out when its just stupid relay contacts.

    Hi Sir, I saw your ad for the CR-620. I have that coming to my workbench in a few weeks and wondered if I can get the replacement component list from you?

    • @Shuksanaudio
      @Shuksanaudio 20 дней назад

      Hey there, I replied to your comment on Facebook I believe. I do not have a parts list as I keep many parts in stock and can pull and replace each component. I did give some tips on transistor replacement though! These are my tips for the CR 620: "Replace all of the darker blue Taicon capacitors. They're almost always 50%+ out of spec. If yours is not made in Japan, almost all of the caps will be Taicon. The preamp is always full of bad caps and transistors. Replace them all. You will need a dozen KSA1015 to replace the 2SA844 and a few toshiba TTA004 and TTB004 in the amplifier. The 1S1885 diodes in the power supply and protect circuit can be replaced with 1N4002. You’ll also need a couple of 1N4148. There are lots of great threads on recapping the 620 on audiokarma."

  • @tapleymw
    @tapleymw 20 дней назад

    Is this basically the same for KG 5.2? I have a speaker that the high end is just dead. I bought replacement drivers with hopes this is it, however I would appreciate a parts list to replace all the components on the board.

    • @Shuksanaudio
      @Shuksanaudio 20 дней назад

      Thanks for watching! The crossover is different. You can just pull the board and look at the components on it. Easiest way to get a parts list together. You should only really need to replace the electrolytic cap and the tweeter protection components since the other caps don't tend to age poorly.

    EVery sound you hear is coming through the solid state amp of your computer. Since SS amps are essentially perfect, if there is any kind of difference, the valve amp is causing distortion.

    • @Shuksanaudio
      @Shuksanaudio 20 дней назад

      Yes, but SS amps are not perfect haha. It depends entirely on the circuit design of the amp.

    Those tweeters are very much irreplaceable. Their lower range is much lower than the usual tweeter, 350 or 700hz, I forget off the top of my head. Maybe the Optimus 1B was 350hz. Nothing in the parts express catalog at the time I had them other than the large diaphragm tweeters had sufficient range.

    • @Shuksanaudio
      @Shuksanaudio 20 дней назад

      The lower driver is actually a mid range. It takes over around 700-800hz up to 4khz or so then the tweeter comes in. They look the same on the front but are labeled differently on the back. Still pretty impressive that the mid driver can go so low with such a small dome.

    I'm going to try the Magic Eraser method. As for the circuit boards, I usually use CRC contact cleaner. You can buy a couple of cans of it and just absolutely spray everything down and soak it and it will not hurt anything. It will usually wash most of the tar off, but you may have to do some scrubbing with a toothbrush. You will want to avoid spraying the if and RF cans of the tuner, as well as the variable capacitor.
